William Roy was born in 1883 in Brockley, Kent, the son of James and Clara Roy.
On the 1901 Census, the family were living at Bourne End Lane, Northchurch, Herts, where his father was a Naval Pensioner and William was working as a Carpenter's Labourer.
He emigrated to Australia, leaving London on 14 June 1907 on ship Mitiades for Brisbane, Australia, where he worked as a Farmer. His parents remained in Bourne End.
Wartime Service
He enlisted on 19 January 1915 at Mackay, Queensland, Australia.
He served with the 15th Battalion, Australian Imperial Force and embarked on A15 Star of England at Brisbane on 8 April 1915, eventually joining the battalion on 7 June 1915.
He was Initially reported wounded and missing, but this was later changed to killed in action on 8 August 1915 on the Gallipoli Peninsula after a Court of Inquiry.
Additional Information
His mother received a pension of £1 a week from 5 March 1916.
