Pre War
Dalbiac Thomas Cotton was born on 7 Apr 1889 in Hitchin to Richard Cotton Rowley, civil engineer, and Margaret Annie (nee Hodgson but being a widow Dent).
On the 1891 Census the family were living at Stone House, High Street Kimpton, Hichin. On the 1901 Census the family were at ‘the Wrekin’, Milton Road, Harpenden and Dalbiac was attending Haileybury College 1903-08 as a member of Batten House.
He entered Army Service in 1908 when He joined 2nd Battalion Duke of Cambridges (Middlesex Regiment as a 2nd Lieutenant and on the 1911 Census he was listed as that rank with 2nd Middx at Headley, Hants.
He married Olive Marie Gower Meaden on 23 July 1915 in Blackheath. stating he was a Lieutenant. They had a daughter Olive Margaret Cotton born on 22 May 1916 and were living at 94, High Street, Kensington, London.
Wartime Service
Dalbiac was promoted to Captain in 1915 having deployed in France on 1 Jan 1915 to 4th Battalion, Middlesex.
As part of 21 Division 4th Middx were involved in the Battle of Albert (part of the greater batlles of the Somme and were attacking in the vicinitty of FRicourt when he was wounded.He died from these wounds in a Field Ambulance station.
Additional Information
His headstone inscription reads "UNTIL THE DAY BREAK" War Gratuity of £56 and arrears of £9 11s 3d, together with probate of £162 13s 7d paid to his widow.
