Pre War

Edward Tyrell Bruce was born on 26th July 1884, and baptised on 27th August 1884 in Murree, Bengal, India, to parents Edward (Col. 19th Lancers, Fanes Horses) and Christian, he had three sisters and two brothers. 


He attended Bengeo School and Haileybury College 1898 - 1902.   Edward was working with the Department of Agriculture in Kampala, Uganda before the War. While living in Africa Edward joined the Buganda Rifles Volunteers, one of the battalions in the Kings African Rifles, as a Captain and Officer Commanding on their formation.

Wartime Service

On the outbreak of war he transferred to the East African Forces as a Lieutenant on the Unattached List and fought in East Africa from 17 March 1915. Sometime later He returned to the UK and was commissioned on 10 Apr 17 as a Second Lieutenant in the Machine Gun Corps. He was posted to the 8th Division where he joined one of the machine gun companies until February 1918 when they were amalgamated into the 8th Machine Gun Battalion. 

On the Aisne in 1918 he died from wounds received during the battle between 27th May and 6th June.
Probate records state he was of the Dept. of Agriculture, Kampala, Uganda and also at Kingsley Cherry Gardens Avenue, Folkstone, Kent.  He left £1641 9s 9d to his sister Margaret Helen Bruce.

Additional Information

His brother Major Stanley Malcolm Bruce, 37th Lancers, (Baluch Horse), also died on 25th May 1918, in Deh Sheikh,   Persia, Iran.
