Pre War

Born on 12 Dec 1871 in Epping son of Thomas and Susan (Reed) Brown and was living in Tidy Lane, Theydon Gamon, Epping in 1881 and later in 21 Bell Lane, Hoddesdon, Hertfordshire.

He married Jessie White in 1899 in Epping and lived in 5 Burford Terrace, Hoddesdon with five children in 1911.

He was a brewer’s labourer. Previously he had been in the King’s Royal Rifles for 12 years serving in South Africa 1901-02 and was involved in action at Laing's Nek, Transvaal, the relief of Ladysmith, Orange Free State and Cape Colony.

Wartime Service

He re-enlisted at Hertford on 24 May 1915 and was killed whilst changing guard on a military train on Welwyn Viaduct.

He was knocked down by a fish train en route to Kings Cross at 2.00am 14 Aug 1915 (Ref Hertfordshire Mercury Sat 21 Aug 1915).
