Pre War

James Albert George Rossiter was born in Hertford, Hertfordshire, in 1897, son of Harry Robert Rossiter a soldier and Susan Eliza Rossiter (nee Abbey).


His father Harry died on 16th October 1900, the death was recorded at Netley, Hampshire.


1901 Census records, James, aged 4, his widowed mother Susan and brother Harry (1), living with his aunt Rebecca Westwood and her two children at, 43 Talbot Street, Hertford, Herts.


His mother Susan remarried on 24th April 1905 at Saint Andrews Church, Hertford, to Alfred Milton, a Carman.


1911 Census, James (14) had left school and was working as a Nursery Hand, living with his mother, Stepfather Alfred Milton, his brother Harry (11) and half-sisters Nora and Winnie Milton at, 158 High Street, Cheshunt, Herts. 

Wartime Service

James enlisted at Hertford in October 1915, aged 18, initially with the Hertfordshire Regiment with the service number 5620, later transferred to the Princess Charlotte of Wales (Royal Berkshire Regiment) with the service number 36444. Seeing action on the Western Front.


He was Killed in Action on 30th September 1916, aged 19, during the Battle of the Somme (Battle of the Somme 1st July – 18th November 1916), his Battalion was in the area of the Schwaben Redoubt, Somme, at the time of his death. He has no known grave, he is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial, Somme, France, to the missing.

Additional Information

His mother Susan Milton received a Dependents Pension of 4/- a week from 29th August 1917, and his effects of £3-14s-9d, pay owing and his war gratuity of £3.


His father was a serving soldier with the 2nd Battalion, Bedfordshire Regiment, with the service number 3577. He died on 16th October 1900 at Netley, Hampshire, aged 30, (possible at the Netley Military Hospital as he was a serving soldier).


His name is spelt ROSSETER on the Hertfordshire Regiment Memorial, All Saints Church, Hertford.
