Watford Borough Roll of Honour

Pre War

Son of John and Margaret (nee McLEOD) ROSS of Watford.

His parents married 1880 in the Pontypridd, Glam, district.  Margaret died 1924 in Watford aged 68, and was buried 27 March in Vicarage Road Cemetery, Watford.

William was born 17 January 1881 in Pontypridd, Glam.  He attended Coed-Pen-Maen Boys’ School, Pontypridd, from 16 April 1888 to 2 August 1889; then Albany Road School, Cardiff; finally Crwys Road School, Cardiff, from 5 May 1891 to 5 October 1894.  He resided in Watford.

On the 1881 Census, aged 3 months he lived in Hafodunog, Glam, with his parents and no siblings.  On the 1891 Census, aged 10 he lived in Cardiff, with his parents and three siblings.  On the 1901 Census, a draper’s traveler aged 21, he lived in Wellington, Shrops, with his parents and three siblings.  On the 1911 Census, a travelling draper aged 30, he lived in Watford, with his parents and one sibling.

Wartime Service

He enlisted in Bedford; was entitled to the Victory and British War medals, and was killed in action when relieved in the front line at Givenchy-les-La-Bassee.  

Additional Information

Unfortunately, William’s Service Record appears to be one that did not survive the World War Two bombing.

Recorded in the Borough Roll of Honour as ROSS W C.
