Pre War

Vernon John Wallace Ross was born in Auburn, Victoria, the son of John and Caroline Ross who lived at Whyte Street, Somerton, South Australia. They later lived at 23 Eskdale Road, Caulfield, Victoria.


He worked as a commercial representative and gave his address on enlistment as the Commonwealth Bank, Melbourne, Victoria. 

Wartime Service

He enlisted on 19 May 1915 as a 2nd Lieutenant with the 23rd Battalion, 9th Reinforcement and his unit embarked from Melbourne, Victoria on board HMAT A69 Warilda on 8 February 1916.


He served on the Western Front and was promoted to Lieutenant with the 23rd Battalion. He was killed in action on 23 April 1918. 

Additional Information

His father, Mr J W Ross of 23 Eskdale Road, Caulfield, Victoria, Australia, ordered his headstone inscription: "HIS WERE GENTLENESS, MANLINESS HONOUR AND CLEAN MIRTH". Brother: 5401 Corporal Ralph Wallace ROSS, 21st Bn, returned to Australia, 22 July 1917.
