Kenneth James Brown was born in Waltham Cross, Hertfordshire, in 1893, son of Arthur William Brown a, Chargehand at the Royal Small Arms factory and Alice Brown (nee Goard). One of five children.
Baptised in the Parish Church, Waltham Cross, Herts, on 21st May 1893.
1901 Census records Kenneth aged 8, living with his parents, brothers John (15), and Sydney (12) at, 82 Eleanor Road, Waltham Cross, Herts. His father Arthur William Brown died in 1904, aged 45.
1911 Census records Kenneth aged 18, working as a Groom, living with his widowed mother, brothers John (25) and Arthur (6) at, 71 Eleanor Road, Waltham Cross, Herts.
Kenneth enlisted for four years in the 1st Battalion, Hertfordshire Regiment Territorial Force in March 1911, aged 18, issued with the service number 1682. He enlisted as George Brown, in November 1912, he resigned from the Territorial Force and enlisted in the Regular Army for 6 years in the Colours and six years with the Reserve, this time he enlisted as Kenneth George Brown, joining the Royal Field and Horse Artillery at Woolwich on 22nd November 1912, with the service number 71263.
In December 1913, he sailed for India with the 63rd Battery, Royal Field Artillery (RFA).
Wartime Service
At the outbreak of war Kenneth and his Battery were still in India, mobilized for war and moved to Mesopotamia in November 1914.
He was taken a prisoner of war (POW) on 29th April 1916, at Kut-El-Amara, and died whilst a POW of Beri-Beri-Malaria in Hospital, on 16th August 1916, he was initially buried in the Hospital Cemetery, grave ref; 1167.
Additional Information
His effects of £30-1s-10d Pay Owing was split between his mother Alice, Brothers John, and Arthur, Sister Florence and Sister-in-Law Dorothy, his War Gratuity of £11-10s-00d went to his mother Alice.
