Pre War

Harry was the son of George and Alice Brown (nee Cole), and was born in Whetstone, London, on the 16th of July 1893.

He was educated in North Finchley and was a clerk.

Wartime Service

His name appears in De Ruvigny’s Roll of Honour, and the entry confirms that Harry joined the Civil Service Rifles on the outbreak of war in August 1914, and was accidentally killed at Watford on the 24th of February 1915 when he was thrown from his horse during training.

Additional Information

*1 If known, the ‘Barnet’ memorial is given, however ‘Barnet’ now appears to be the generic name for many historically separate Hertfordshire locations with Barnet in their name. While we try to unravel these – any help gratefully received! – we have to record ‘Barnet’. It may be that a person appears on several historical ‘barnets’. As this work is done, we will add further detail.
