George was born in Islington, London around 1887 and was the son of Son of Daniel and Emma Brown (née Gray) – both born in Hitchin – and who married in St Mary’s Church, Hitchin in 1868. Her full name was Eliza Emma Glazebrook Gray. His grandparents were John and Caroline Brown.


In 1901 the family were living at 39, Cottenham Rd., Holloway, London. Present were both parents: Daniel and Emma Brown – both 51, with Daniel working as a bricklayer. Their children were: Henry (19), George at 14 was working as an apprentice plumber), William (12) and Frank (9).


By 1911 the family were living at 2 Sirdar Road, Wood Green, West Green, Tottenham, London. Present were both parents, Daniel still working as a bricklayer and Frank now a plumber’s mate. Brother William was also present.


He must have gone to Australia after 1911.


He enlisted in the Australian Imperial Force on 29th February 1915 and joined “A” Coy. 18th Battalion, 5th Brigade. At that time he was 28 years and 3 months old, working as a bricklayer and gave his mother as his next of kin, living at 2 Cedar Road, Wood Green, North London. He was described 5’ 8” tall, 152 lbs with grey eyes, dark hair and had a dark complexion.

Wartime Service

George embarked at Sydney on HMAT Ceramic on 25 June 1915 and served in Gallipoli. He received a gunshot wound to his chest on the 27th August and was being transported from 16 Casualty Clearing Station to the Anzac Base, but he died the following day at sea on the Hospital Ship Maheno, however a letter to his mother gives HS Gascon.


He was bureid at sea off Lemnos on 29th August 1915.


His Will was made out in favour of Lilian Brown of 32 Devonshire Place, Winpole(sic) Street, London.
