Pre War

Son of Joseph and Mary Ann (nee BOARDER); husband of Emily L (nee BROOKS) BROWN.

His parents married 16 December 1879 at St Mary’s, Pitstone, Bucks.  Joseph died 1942 aged 83; Mary died 1045 aged 90; both in the Hemel Hempstead, Herts, district.

Arthur was born 1884 in Pitstone, and baptised 1 December 1889 at St John the Baptist, Aldbury, Herts.  He married 1912 in the Watford district; they had one child.  Emily never remarried, and died 1966 in the Watford district aged 82.

On the 1891 Census, a scholar aged 6, he lived in Pitstone, with his parents and three siblings.  On the 1901 Census, a farm labourer aged 16, he lived in Hemel Hempstead, with his parents and three siblings.  On the 1911 Census, he is proving elusive.

Wartime Service

He enlisted in Woolwich, London SE; was entitled to the Victory, British War and 1914 Star medals, his qualifying date being 19 August 1914, and was killed in action.

There is an article about and a Death announcement for Arthur in the West Herts and Watford Observer dated 1 September 1917.

Unfortunately, Arthur’s Service Record appears to be one that did not survive the World War Two bombing.
