Pre War

Albert Edward was born in St Leonards, Hastings, Sussex in 1896 to William James Brown, and Emily (nee Billings) and on the 1901 Census the family were living at 3 Aldborough Road, St Leonards, Hastings. 


Albert had an elder brother Ernest James, elder sisters Emma and Nellie, younger brothers George, Frederick. On the 1911 Census the family were now living at 26, Manor Road, Hastings and the family had increased with brothers Sydney and William and younger sister Elsie. His Parents later lived at  2, Oakfield Cottages, Cockfosters, Barnet.

Wartime Service

Albert attested on 26 Jan 1916 (occupation -Tram Conductor) and was placed on Army Reserve until he was mobilised on 29 Feb 1916.


He was posted to 3rd Battalion Royal Sussex Regiment as Private G/9093 on 2 Mar 1916. Albert was posted to 2nd Battalion on 21 Jun 1916.


He was attached to 22 Battalion, Manchester Regiment and was killed in Action on 2 Sep 1916 probably at Delville Wood on the Somme. His Body was not recovered and he is remembered on the Thiepval Memorial of the Somme.

Additional Information

War Gratuity of £3 and arrears of £27 s 10d was paid to his father. Brother Ernest James (b.1888) served as L/Cpl in 11 (Service) Battalion Royal Sussex, was decorated with the Military Medal but was killed in action on 12 Oct 1916. Brother George (b. 1898) served as Driver MT in Army service Corps and survived the Great War. Brother Frederick (b.1900) served as Gunner RFA.
