Pre War
Frederick (Fred) ROLT was born in Redbourn, Hertfordshire, in 1887, son of William Rolt a Farm Cowman and Elizabeth Tyler Rolt (nee Day) one of their fifteen children. The Register of births records him as Fred ROTE and his birth was registered in Hemel Hempstead, Herts. His parents married on 17th July 1869, at Caddington, Beds.
1891 Census records Frederick aged 4, living with his parents, three brothers and four sisters, at Tassell Hall, Norrington End, Redbourn, Herts.
1901 Census, Frederick (14) has left school and is employed as a Gardener’s Helper, the Family are now living in Lybury Lane, Redbourn, Herts.
Frederick married Frances Minnie Bullock in mid-1908, in St Albans, they went on to have two children, Ella Gladys Rolt born in June 1909, and Sydney Frederick Rolt born in April 1911. The Register of marriages records Frederick as BOLT not Rolt.
1911 Census records Frederick as married to Frances and they have one child Ella, they are living at 13 Old London Road, St Albans, Herts.
Wartime Service
Frederick travelled to the County Town of Hertford to enlist, posted to the Duke of Wellingtons (West Riding Regiment), issued with the service number 203345. On completion of his training Frederick was sent to the Western Front, obtaining the Rank of Corporal.
He died in Hospital at St Omer on 21st June 1917, aged 31, of Meningitis, he is buried in Longuenesse (St Omer) Souvenir Cemetery in France. Grave Ref: IV. C. 35.
Additional Information
His widow Frances was awarded a grant of £5, on 10th October 1917, a widow’s pension of 24 shillings & 2 Pence, (£1-04s-02d) a week from 31st December 1917, and his effects of £5-08s-09d, pay owing and his war gratuity of £9.
His Headstone inscription “AT REST” was requested by his widow, Frances Minnie Rolt, of 13 Old London Road, St Albans, Herts.
