Hitchin Town Memorial, St Mary's Church Roll of Honour, Hitchin

Pre War

Born Hitchin on 25 December 1884 and educated in Northampton. No further details have been found until 1911 when he was 25 and a Private in the Highland Light Infantry in Lucknow, India.


He later worked as a currier in Northampton.


As he was serving soldier before the war, in the Highland Light Infantry, he was called up from the reserve, when war was declared.


Official records give his as born in Hitchin and enlisting in Northampton.

Wartime Service

His name appears in De Ruvigny’s Roll of Honour, the entry reads:


"BROUGHTON, WILLIAM, Private, No.  10273, 2nd Battn.  (74th Foot) The Highland Light Infantry, son of (-) Broughton; born Hitchin, co.  Herts, 25 Dec.  1884; educated Northampton; enlisted in the H.L.I., and later worked as a Currier in Northampton; was called up on mobilisation; served with the Expeditionary Force in France from 12 Aug.  1914, and died 21 Oct.  following, of wounds received in action at Ypres.  Buried in a churchyard there."
