Pre War
Robert John Rogers was born in Watford, Hertfordshire, on 4 November 1891, son of Robert J. Rogers a Domestic Gardener and Annie (Ann) Rogers (nee Gosney). One of six children.
Baptised on 7th February 1892, in the Parish of Oxhey, Herts.
1901 Census record Robert aged 9, living with his parents, brother Edward (5), and three sisters, Ellen (12), Bessie (2) and Lilian ( 3 months) at, Bushey Hall Cottages, Bushey, Herts.
1911 Census records Robert aged 19, employed as a Grocer’s Shop Assistant, living with his parents, brother Edward, sisters Bessie and Lilian at, 38, Malden Road, Borehamwood, Herts, his father is now working as a Horseman on a Farm.
Officially recorded as born in Watford and was living in Boreham Wood when he enlisted in St Albans.
Wartime Service
Robert enlisted at St Albans, Herts, posted to the Duke of Cambridge’s Own (Middlesex) Regiment with the service number 2460 (SDITGW give 3370).
He arrived in France on 5 October 1916, with the 11th Battalion, Middlesex Regiment. Transferred to the 9th Battalion, Royal Fusiliers with the new service number GS/60579, on 23 October 1916.
He was killed in action on 9 April 1917, aged 25, he has no known grave, he is commemorated on the Arras Memorial to the missing in France.
Additional Information
His mother Ann received his effects of 19/- Pay Owing and a War Gratuity of £3. His younger brother Edward was killed in action on 28 September 1918, aged 22.
