Pre War
Philip ROGERS was born in Greens Norton, Northamptonshire on 27th June 1874, son of William Rogers a General Labourer and Frances Rogers (nee Wright). One of thirteen children of which three died.
He was Baptised on 5th July 1874, in the Parish of Greens Norton, Northants.
His father William Rogers passed away in 1876, Aged 50, in Greens Norton.
1881 Census records Philip aged 7, at school, living with his widowed mother, sisters Catherine (10), Olive (4) and brother Arthur (9), at 2 Middle Church Hill, Greens Norton, Northants.
Philip enlisted in the Royal Navy joining at Chatham, **, on 16th April 1892, aged 18, for twelve years and issued with the service number P. 155323 (CH). On completion of his twelve years’ service, he re-enlisted in April 1904. He rose through the ranks and on his retirement in October 1910, he held the rank of Petty Officer.
1901 Census records Philip aged 27, single, a Leading Seaman in the Royal Navy, serving aboard “HMS Terpsichore”, in Simon’s Bay, South Africa.
Philip married Edith Thorne of Portsmouth, Hampshire, the daughter of Samuel and Zillah Thorne, on 6th July 1904, the marriage was registered in Edmonton, Middx. They went on to have four children, Philip H (B 1905), William (B 1908), Edith (B 1909) & Mable (B 1912).
1911 Census records Philip aged 37, married to Edith, they have three children, Philip Jr. (5), William (2) & Edith (1), living at 12 Berridge Road, Sheerness, Kent. His occupation is given as a Labourer in a Chart Office.
His mother Frances Rogers passed away in 1911, in Greens Norton, aged 79.
Daughter Mable Marian Rogers was born on 30th July 1912, in Sheerness, Kent.
Wartime Service
On 2nd August 1914, Philip re-enlisted in the Royal Navy, with his old rank of Petty Officer and service number P. 155323 (CH).
Prior to his death he had been serving aboard ”HMS India” until 25th June 1915. He was taken ill and admitted to Glasgow Royal Infirmary, Glasgow, Lanarkshire, Scotland, where he died on 28th June 1915, aged 42, of Pneumonia. He is buried in Glasgow Western Necropolis, Glasgow, Lanarkshire, Scotland.
Additional Information
Edith received a widow’s pension of 26/- (£1-06-00) a week from 30th December 1915.
