Pre War
John Creswell/Cresswell Rogers was born in 1882 in Bushey, Herts, son of Frederick Alfred Rogers, a House Painter and Elizabeth Sarah Rogers (nee Bowley). They originally lived in London and were married on 14th October 1877, at St Mary’s Church in the parish of Battersea.
John was the fourth of thirteen children, Lillian Caroline (B 1878), Frederick John and Edith Annie (Twins B 1880), Jane E. (B 1885), Olive Gertrude (B 1887), Ethel W. (B 1889), Horace James and Helen Grace (Twins B 1892), Richard Sidney (B 1895), Agnes Muriel and Annie M. (Twins B 1899) and Elsie Ruth (B 1902). (Three sets of twins).
1881 the family were living in Aldenham Road, Bushey, Herts. (The four eldest children, including John, were born here).
1891 Census records John aged 8, living with his parents and 4 siblings at 31, Litcham Street, Kentish Town, St Pancras, London.
1901 Census records John aged 18 and working as a Builders Labourer, living with his parents, and 10 siblings still at 31 Litcham Street, Kentish Town, St Pancras.
On 22nd May 1901, John enlisted at London in the 3rd Battalion, The Queens, Royal West Surrey Regiment, Militia, with the service number 1744. He was discharged on 21st May 1907, on completion of six years’ service.
No 1911 Census record were found for John.
At the time he enlisted he was living at 19 Carlton Road, Kentish Town.
Wartime Service
John re-enlisted at Marylebone, London on 12th August 1914, aged 31, he was posted to the Norfolk Regiment with the service number 3/8200, he landed in France on 27th December 1914 with the 1st Battalion, he received a Gun Shot wound to the right arm on 25th February 1915, which required him being hospitalised, he returned home to No. 14 General Hospital, Bexley, Kent, arriving there on 5th March 1915.
On his recovery he returned to France on 19th October 1915 and was posted to the 7th Battalion. In December 1915 he received a shell wound to his back and head. He died of his wounds at 12.10 Hrs on 19th December 1915, at No 33 Casualty Clearing Station in Bethune, France.
The buried was conducted by the Reverend W. E. Morgan at Bethune Town Cemetery near Arras in France.
He is commemorated at St Matthew’s Church, quite close to Aldenham Road where he was born.

The value of his effects were £1-13s-2d, Pay owing and £5-10s-0d, War Gratuity which went to his Mother Elizabeth. Son of Frederick Alfred and Elizabeth Sarah Rogers, of 19, Carlton Rd., Kentish Town, London. Native of Bushey, Watford. Also see ‘Additional Information’ provided with kind permission of Bushey First World War Commemoration Project. *1 Records found have recorded his birthplace as Bushey. This may be the case, however Bushey was the main postal location given for nearby villages and hamlets, so it may be that this information is misleading. If more accurate information found this will be updated.
