Henry Milward Rogers was born on 27 September 1879, in Stockport, Lancashire, son of William Rogers, a Mining Engineer, Justices of the Peace and Mayor of Wigan in 1888, and Ellen/Helen (nee Proctor) Rogers.
1881 Census records Henry aged 1, living with his Mother (his father was away working) and sister Annie 8, at 48, Talbot Street, North Meols, Stockport, Lancashire. The family had a live-in Domestic Servant and a Nurse.
He was educated at Bilton Grange School, Bilton, Rugby, Warwickshire, in 1894, he went to Radley Collage, Abingdon, Oxfordshire. His father William Rogers died in 1890, aged 44.
1891 Census records Henry aged 11, a Scholar at Bilton Grange School, Bilton, Rugby, Warwickshire.
On 3 August 1899, Henry enlisted in the 5th (Territorial) Battalion, Manchester Regiment. He was commissioned Captain on 17 June 1905.
By the 1901 Census now aged 21, Henry was working as a Mining engineer, living at home with his widowed mother, and sister Annie 28 at, “The Woodlands” Wigan Lane, Wigan, Lancashire. The family had three live-in Domestic Servants. Henry was working for “Messer’s Kellett Ellis Walker and Rogers, of Wigan, Lancashire”.
He married Muriel Ainsworth in July 1903, at Holy Trinity Church, Horwich, Bolton, Lancashire. They went on to have three sons, Charles, Martin, and David.
1911 Census records Henry aged 30, married to Muriel, employed as a Mining Engineer, they have three sons, Charles 6, Martin 3, and David 6 months, living at “Alderbrook” Parbold, Nr Stockport, Lancashire. The family had two Domestic Nurses and two Domestic Servants, living-in.
Wartime Service
On the out break of war Henry was still serving as a Captain in the Territorial Force, Volunteering for overseas service. He left England with his Battalion on 3 September 1914, arriving in Egypt on 29 September 1914, landing in the Dardanelles on 3 May 1915.
He was wounded in action three weeks later and died of his wounds aboard H.M. Hospital Ship “Reindeer” on 26 May 1915. He is buried on the Greek Island of Limnos (Lemnos), at the CWGC East Mudros Military Cemetery.
Additional Information
His widow, Mrs. Muriel Rogers, "Braziers", Chipperfield, Kings Langley, Herts. ordered his headstone inscription: "I THANK MY GOD UPON EVERY REMEMBRANCE OF YOU. PHIL. 1ST,3RD". Also remembered on the family grave, St Wilfred's Churchyard, Standish, Wigan.
Harry's widow Muriel moved to "Braziers" Chipperfield, Herts, after Harry's death. His effects went to probate.
