Pre War

Edward Rogers was born in Watford, Hertfordshire, on 28th November 1895, son of Robert J. Rogers a Domestic Gardener and Annie (Ann) Rogers (nee Gosney). One of six children.


Baptised on 14 July 1897, at St Andrews Church, Watford, Herts.


1901 Census record Edward aged 5, living with his parents, brother Robert (9), and three sisters, Ellen (12), Bessie (2) and Lilian ( 3 months) at, Bushey Hall Cottages, Bushey, Herts.


1911 Census records Edward aged 15, employed as a Greengrocer’s Shop Assistant, living with his parents, brother Robert, sisters Bessie and Lilian at, 38, Malden Road, Borehamwood, Herts, his father is now working as a Horseman on a Farm.


Officially recorded as born in Watford and was living in Boreham Wood when he enlisted in Kilburn Middlx.

Wartime Service

Edward enlisted at Kilburn, London/Middx, on 12 June 1915, aged 19, posted to the Kings Royal Rifle Corps with the service number 14118 then 48654, joining at Winchester, Hampshire, on 17 June 1915, posted to the 5th Battalion, on 25 June 1915.


His service record indicated he was in France between 29 September and 30 October 1915, then returning to the UK.


He returned to France on 7th July 1918. Was transferred to the Middlesex Regiment, and posted to the 20th Battalion, with the new service number GS/62060, effective from 15 July 1918.


He was killed in action two months later on 28 September 1918, aged 22.

Additional Information

His mother Ann received his effects of £12-5s-11d, Pay Owing and a War Gratuity of £15. His elder brother Robert John Rogers was killed in action on 9 April 1917, aged 25.
