Pre War

Frederick William Rodwell was born in 1896 in Dartford, Kent, the son of Herbert and Minnie Rodwell, and one of 12 children. 


On the 1901 Census the family were living at Aston Villa, Weymouth Street, Apsley, Hemel Hempstead, when his father was working as a Steam Engine Fitter at the Paper Mill. They remained in Weymouth Street, living at No. 77 at the time of the1911 Census, at which time Frederick was working as a Printer at the paper works. 


He had been a member of the Apsley Church Lads Brigade and the Bible Class. 

Wartime Service

He enlisted as a Private with the Bedfordshire Regiment but seemingly died before he had been posted abroad and died at home in Apsley of tuberculosis on 23 September 1916, aged 20. He is buried in St Mary's Churchyard, Apsley, however this is a family grave and is not listed on the CWGC website. 


He does not appear to be recorded on any other other military lists. 

Additional Information

Brother to Herbert Thomas Rodwell who served with the Bedfordshire Regiment and died of wounds received in action at Arras on 17 April 1917 and is buried at Duisans British Cemetery, Etrun, and brother to Thomas Bernard Rodwell who joined the Australian Imperial Force and died of wounds received in action on 29 July 1916 and is buried at Becourt Military Cemetery, France. Not listed in the CWGC database.
