Pre War

George Bromley was born in Brenchley, Kent, in 1889, son of George Bromley an, Agricultural Worker and Ellen Bromley (nee Botten). One of seven children although one died in childhood.


He was Baptised at All Saints Church, Brenchley, Kent, on 27th January 1889.


1891 Census records George aged 2, living with his parents, sister Emily (3) and brother Joe (9 months) at, Cottages, Tibbs Court, Brenchley, Kent.


1901, George, his parents, three sisters and two brothers are living at, 3, Spout Lane, Brenchley, Kent.


1911, George is working as a Nursery Hand in the Cheshunt area, boarding with Benjamin and Alice Speller at, 11, Turnford Cottages, Turnford, Herts.

Wartime Service

George enlisted at Cheshunt, Herts, posted to the 8th Battalion, Bedfordshire Regiment, with the service number 16058.


The 8th Battalion, Bedfordshire Regiment was formed at Bedford in October 1914, as part of Kitchener’s Third Army (K3) coming under the 71st Brigade of the 24th Division”.


The Battalion was mobilized for war in August 1915, while stationed at Blackdown Camp, Surrey. George and his Battalion arrive in France on 30th August 1915. Seeing action on the Western Front. He was killed in action on 18th October 1915.

Additional Information

His mother received a dependents pension of 5/- a week from 6th November 1918. His effects of £5-2s-4d, Pay Owing went to his father George Snr. His mother Ellen received his War Gratuity of £5.
