Pre War
Born 1900 in Barnet, the second child of 6 of Albert and Florence, where his father worked as a nurseryman, the family living at The Nursery, Brookhill Road, Barnet.
In 1911 the family were now living in Pantile Cottages, Goffs Oak.
Wartime Service
Middlesex Regiment attached to 19th County of London (St. Pancras Rifles) also served as Private 67422 Royal West Surrey Regiment.
Although it is difficult to read the following is an extract from 19th London War diary for 1st September 1918: Battalion in position at Hill 150 at 5.30 a.m. Battalion attacked under cover of barrage, enemy positions were objective, skirting the edge of St. Pierre Vaast Wood. Many prisoners were taken and attack successful. It is likely he was killed in this action.
Additional Information
His effects of £4-8s-8d, Pay Owing and his War Gratuity of £5, went to his father Albert Bromley. *1 If known, the ‘Barnet’ memorial is given, however ‘Barnet’ now appears to be the generic name for many historically separate Hertfordshire locations with Barnet in their name. While we try to unravel these – any help gratefully received! – we have to record ‘Barnet’. It may be that a person appears on several historical ‘barnets’. As this work is done, we will add further detail.
