Pre War

William Arthur Teear was born in 1894 in Barton-in-Irwell, Lancashire in 1894 to Thomas Teear, coachman, and Jane (nee Riley).


On the 1901 Census the family of parents, Thomas E (born 1893), William A, Nellie (born 1896), Francis J (born 1898) wre living at 14-15 Adams Mews, St Georges, Hanover Square. They also had boarders: Henry Moore, (coachman), William Abbott, Charles Nightwitch, George Hulme and James Harris (all stable men). 


On the 1911 Census William was a warehouse clerk living with his parents, Thomas E, Francis, and George Hacker (stableman) with his wife, Elizabeth were as boarders at 20a, Williams mews, Knightsbridge.

Wartime Service

No service Record was found for William. He enlisted as Private 11408 in 1st Battalion of Princess of Wales’ (Royal Berkshire Regiment) presumably soon after the outbreak of the Great War.


Following his training he went of France on 23 Feb 1915 to join his Battalion in the field in the Ypres sector. His Battalion as part of 99 Brigade 2nd Division were to take part in 1915 in the Battle of Festubert ( 15-25 May) and Loos (25 Sep- 8 Oct). In the latter battle William was reported killed in action on 28 Sep 1955, his remains were not recovered and he is remembered on the Loos Memorial. The Berkshires attacked Fosse 8 at 2.30 a.m. on the night of 27/28 Sep under moonlight and were stopped within 70 yards of their objective.
