Pre War
Born in 1887, in Hatfield, to parents William Francis and Sarah Ann, his father was employed as a cowman. In 1891 he was living in Newtown, Hatfield with his mother, who was a laundress and his sisters Flory and Fanny along with his brother Edward. By 1901 he had moved to another area of Hatfield still living with his mother and with a sister Jane. In 1911 his widowed mother was living at 33N Oakers Buildings, St Andrews Street, Hertford, on her own, with no sign of John. At the time of his death his mother was living at 71 Port Hill, Bengeo.
Wartime Service
Enlisted in London and posted to 1st Bttn, which sailed for Gallipoli via Egypt and Lemnos arriving on 25th April where they landed at ‘X’ beach at Cape Helles. They took up positions about 700 yards inland where they held off a Turkish attack in the evening. On 27th June they moved to Gurkha Bluff and attacked Turkish positions the following day, they took the enemy trenches and held them against a counter attack. On the 29th the Turks attacked heavily, and part of the British line had to retreat but was held eventually, it was during this attack that John was killed.
