Pre War
Charles Robinson was born in 1878, in Keighley, Yorkshire, son of Robert Robinson and Elizabeth Robinson (nee Dyer). One of eight children.
1881 Census records Charles aged 4, living with his mother Elizabeth, three brother and two sisters at Purdomstown Warter Works, Middlebie, Dumfriesshire, Scotland. His father was working away from home and is recorded as a Navvy, Boarding with Alexander and Margaret McKenzie in Port of Monteith, Perthshire, Scotland. His father died later the year on 20th May 1881, aged 53, in Port of Menteith.
His mother remarried in June 1882 to William McGregor, in Port of Menteith, Perthshire.
1891 Census records Charles as Charles McGregor, aged 13, living with his Mother, Stepfather William McGregor, three brothers, sister Elizabeth and three half-brothers, in, Duthil, Inverness.
Charles married Maggie Smith at the Church of St. Columba’s, in Edinburgh, on 9th November 1898, they went on to have nine children.
1901 Census records Charles, wife Maggie and their young son William, living with his mother, stepfather and two half-brothers, Robert (18) and Dougal McGregor (16) in Rathculliheen, Kilkenny, Ireland.
1911 Charles and the family were believed to be living in Scotland. They later moved to Alma Road, Ponders End, Middlesex.
His mother Elizabeth died on 14th May 1917, aged 73.
Wartime Service
On enlisting he was posted to the 67th Provisional Battalion, for home service duties and issued with the service number 56434. (It was formed in June 1915, from Home Service Personnel).
At the time Charles enlisted he was employed as a Machine Hand at the Ponders End Shell Factory.
On 1st January 1917, while stationed at Sheringham, Norfolk, the Battalion became the 17th Battalion, Essex Regiment.
Charles died on 14th November 1918, aged 40, at Thorpe Military Hospital, Norwich, of Pneumonia. He is buried in the Cheshunt Burial Ground, Burry Green Road, Cheshunt, Herts.
Additional Information
Maggie received a widow’s pension of £2.6s.3d, a week from 26th May 1919 and his effects of £3.10s.3d, pay owing.
Charles was not awarded a Medal as he did not serve overseas.
Charles' headstone (not CWGC) reads:
PTE. CHARLES ROBINSON DIED NOV. 14TH 1918.
