Pre War

Victor Arthur Brice was born on 2 September 1897, in Charlton, Hampshire, son of James George Brice, a Railway Platelayer and Fanny (nee Webb) Brice. The eldest of five children.


1901 Census records Victor aged 3, living with his parents, and brother Leonard (6 months) in Charlton Road, Charlton, Hampshire.


In 1904, the family moved to Nether Wallop, Hants, where Victor attended Nether Wallop C of E School from September 1904 to September 1911


1911 Census records Victor aged 13, at school, living with his parents and four siblings at, Peacocks Cottages, Nether Wallop, Hampshire. In 1912 the family moved to Merton Road, Watford, Herts.

Wartime Service

Victor enlisted at Watford, Herts, in November 1915, aged 18, posted to the Royal Army Service Corps with the service number T4/146256, later transferred to the Yorkshire Regiment with the service number 34639. Arriving in France in 1916. Seeing action at Arras, Ypres, and Passchendaele.


He was reported missing on 30 March 1918, during the Second Battle of the Somme, and not heard of since, presumed Killed in Action. He has no known grave and is commemorated on the Poziers Memorial to the fallen in France.

Additional Information

The value of his effects was £24-8s-1d, which went to his father James G. Brice. *1 At this time it is not clear if Victor has a direct connection to Watford other than his parents living there.
