James William Doughty was born in Weston, Baldock, Herts in 1894, the son of William and Agnes Doughty and one of five children, although two died in infancy.
On the 1901 Census the family were living at 'The Anchor' public house in Baldock where his father was the inn keeper and also worked as a traction engine driver. They remained in Baldock in 1911 but had moved to Salisbury Road, and his father was then working as an engine driver on a threshing machine. James was then working as an iron moulder. His parents later lived at 17 Glebe Rd, Letchworth, Herts.
