William Brandom was born on 15 May 1894 in Berkhampstead, Tring to Frederick William Brandom, house painter, and Martha (nee Harris).
On the 1901 Census William together with his widowed father, sister Minnie (born 1893) and younger brother Sidney H (born 1897) were living with his father’s mother in law Sarah Harris at 11, New Town, Tring.
William’s mother died in 1897.
William’s father married Ellen Wilkins in 1902.
On the 1911 Census William was living with his father. step mother Ellen. (nee Wilkins) Minnie, Sidney and step brother Thomas Arthur Joseph (born 1903) at 24 Henry Street, Tring.
William migrated to Canada some time between 1911 and 1914.
Wartime Service
William enlisted in Winnipeg on 3 Mar 1915, giving his occupation as box maker and was posted to 27th Battalion Canadian Infantry (City of Winnipeg). He embarked aboard SS Carpathia on 17 May 1915 for UK but is listed in Hospital at Shorncliffe on 14 Aug 1915. Returning to his Unit on 12 Sep 1915 he was transferred to 11th Reserve Battalion. He went to France from Southampton on1 Nov 1915 arriving at Canadian Base Depot on 2 Nov being posted into 27 Battalion on 14 Nov. 27 Battalion were part of 6th Brigade, 2nd Canadian Division.
They took part in the Battle of St Eloi Craters (27 Mar-16 Apr 1916) near Ypres. William was reported killed in this action during a German Counter Attack, on 4 Apr 1916, his remains were not recovered and he is remembered on the Menin Gate Memorial, Ypres.
