Pre War

Charles Henry was born on 20 Jul 1897 in Harpenden to Henry Brandon, a night stoker at a nursery, and Charlotte Elizabeth (nee Abbey).


The family Lived at Cold Harbour Lane, Harpenden. Family Surname changes from Brandom to Brandon on census returns.

Wartime Service

Charles enlisted as Private 23104 in the Bedfordshire Regiment and was transferred as Private 13313 into 48th Company, Machine Gun Corps, this company joined 16 Division on 28 Apr 1916  in France.


The 16 Division took part in the Battle of Guillemont, 3 – 6 Sep 1916 and Charles was probably wounded during this action. He died of wounds on 8 Sep 1916 and is remembered on the Thiepval Memorial on the Somme.
