Pre War
Son of Jesse Milford and Phoebe Jane (nee NORWOOD) BRANDON.
His parents married 28 November 1891 at All Saints, Leavesden, Herts. Phoebe died 1933 in Watford aged 63, and was buried 13 June in Vicarage Road Cemetery, Watford; Milford died 1953 in St Alban’s, Herts, aged 87, and was buried 30 March, also in Vicarage Road Cemetery.
Arthur was born 30 or 31 December 1894 in Watford, and baptised 27 February 1895 at St Mary’s, Watford. He attended first Callow Land Infants’ School, Watford; then Callowland Board School from 1 January 1901 to 22 December 1908. He resided in Watford.
On the 1901 Census, aged 6 he lived in Watford, with his parents and five siblings. On the 1911 Census, aged 16 he still lived in Watford, with his parents and eight siblings.
Wartime Service
He enlisted in Watford; was entitled to the Victory, British War and 1914-15 Star medals, his qualifying date being 30 December 1915, and was killed or died of wounds received in a successful German attack on the canal bank front-line trenches near Ypres.
Additional Information
*1 The name A Brandon appears on Watford Borough Roll of Honour and both Christ Church memorials. At present it is not clear whether they are the same man and whether either or both are this man or Albert (Bertie) Brandon (50094) – both have connections to Watford. Unfortunately, Arthur’s Service Record appears to be one that did not survive the World War Two bombing.
