Wartime Service
We believe Joeseph enlisted at Hertford, into the
Hertfordshire Yeomanry T F and issued with the service number 1149. (the
service number 1149 for the Hertfordshire Yeomanry T F was issued in mid-1909,
which would make Joeseph 35 years old when he enlisted).
At the outbreak of war, the Hertfordshire Yeomanry TF had
just completed their annual training, the regiment was mobilized for war, as a
Territorial Force they were a home defence force and could not be forced to
serve overseas, about 80% volunteered for overseas service.
The Regiment sailed from Southampton, on 10th
September 1914, for Egypt, arriving at Alexandria, Egypt, on 25th
September 1914. In August 1915 the 1st Hertfordshire Yeomanry left
Alexandria, for Gallipoli, arriving at Lemons/Limnos, on 17th August
1915, from there to Suvla Bay, Gallipoli. Seeing action there as a dismounted
unit, the Hertfordshire Yeomanry suffered heavy casualties, Joseph being one of
them, he was Killed in Action on 14th September 1915. He is buried
in Green Hill Cemetery, near Suvla Bay, Gallipoli, Turkey. Grave Ref: II. F. I.
