Pre War

Sidney George Lewis ROBERTS was born in the early part of 1897, in Redbourn, Hertfordshire, son of Frederick Roberts a Carman and Mary Ann Fanny Roberts (nee Brandon), his mother is recorded as Brandham in the register of births. One of their eight children. His parents were married on 3rd June 1895, in Redbourn, Herts.


1901 Census records Sidney aged 4, living with his parents, sister Gertrude (5), and brother Reginald (1), in Lamb Lane, Redbourn, Herts.


1911 Census, Sidney (14), is at school, living with his parents, brothers Reginald (11), Charles (6), sisters Gladys (5) and Nellie (2), at 166 Fishpond Street, St Albans, Herts.


Sister Florence May Roberts was born in 1911, and sister Glindoline Winifred Roberts was born in 1914.

Wartime Service

Sidney enlisted at St Albans, Herts, posted to the Bedfordshire Regiment, issued with the service number 4/6922. On completion of his training, he was sent to the Western Front on 12th August 1915. He was Killed in Action on 8th July 1916; at the Battle of the Somme (Battle of the Somme, 1st July to 18th November 1916) he has no known grave, he is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial, Somme, France, to the missing. Additional Information

His effects of £15-17s-07d, pay owing went to his Mother Mary and his war gratuity of £9, went to his father Frederick. 


His mother Mary died in 1920. The 1921 Census record his widower father, Fred, five sisters and brother Charles, living in White Lion lane, London Colney, Herts.
