Pre War
Born in Chillinghurst, Oxfordshire, son of Charles and Dorceas Dormer, of Low Hill, Roydon, Essex. Born at Clippness, Oxford. The St Mark’s baptism register confirms that Charles and Dorceas’s daughter, Florence, was born on 11th May 1899 and baptised in the church on 25th June 1899. The records also show that at the time they were living in Beech Cottage, Colney Heath.
The 1901 census records that the Dormer family were living in Borehamwood and that Arthur had four brothers: Henry, William, Joseph and Albert and three sisters Lilly, Rachel and Florence. The 1901 census also indicates that Dorceas was born in Colney Heath. The family then moved to Royden, as confirmed in the 1911 census, and at the time Arthur was living there with his parents, sister Rachel and brothers Albert, Fred and Thomas.
At some stage between 1911 and 1915 the family moved again, back to Colney Heath. This is confirmed in the school admissions register, as Arthur’s brothers, Frederick (pupil no 276) and Thomas (pupil no 277) commenced at Colney Heath School. The record also confirms their father as Charles and indicates that the school they previously attended was Trinity School, Royden, Essex. Prior to enlisting he worked as a Farm Servant (1911)
Wartime Service
The newspaper article which reported his death recorded that he died of heat in the Persian Gulf which is now modern-day Iraq.
