Herbert John Bradford was born in 1895 in Anstey, Hertfordshire, the son of Amos and Sarah Bradford (nee Seymour), and one of twelve children.
His parents were recorded on the 1901 Census living in Anstey with four of his siblings, but Herbert was then living in Anstey with his aunt and uncle Robert and Martha Bradford.
By 1911 he was living with aunt and uncle Enoch and Mary Bentley and their six children in Daws End, Anstey and working as a farm labourer.
Wartime Service
He enlisted in Hertford and initially joined the Bedfordshire Regiment under reg. no. 23569, later transferring to the Royal Engineers.
Herbert was killed in action on 22 March 1918. He has no known grave and his name is commemorated on the Arras Memorial, France.
Additional Information
His father died in 1918 and his aunt, Mrs Mary Bentley was declared his sole legatee and received a war gratuity of £10 10s and pay owing of £15 5s 7d. A pension card exists showing his dependant as his aunt Mrs Mary Bentley of Daws End, Anstey, Herts. No pension was payable but a gratuity of £33 7s was awarded.
