Pre War

Edwin Ringsell was born in Hemel Hempsted, Herts in 1893, the son of William and Mary Ann Ringsell and one of eleven children, although three died in infancy,

On the 1901 Census the family were living at 27 George Street, Northchurch, Herts, where his father was working as a farrier's fireman and his mother as a laundress. By 1911 Edwin and his older sister Mary were the only two children living at home with their mother. His father is not listed with them. Edwin was then working as a labeller at the chemical works, (probably at Cooper's).

Wartime Service

Edwin enlisted in Hertford and initially joined the Hertfordshire Regiment, as Private no. 6127, later transferring to the 6th Battalion, Princess Charlotte of Wales's (Royal Berkshire) Regiment. At some point he was promoted to Lance Corporal.

He was killed in action during the Battle of the Somme on 12 November 1916. (One source suggests he was killed by shrapnel when on sentry duty).

He has no known grave and his name is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial, France.

Additional Information

His mother received a war gratuity of £3 and pay owing of £5 18s 4d. A pension card exists with his mother named as dependant, but no pension amount is given.

Although recorded as Lance Corporal on several records he is listed as a Private on the regimental memorial.
