Pre War

Edward Bowman was born in 1893 in Bishop's Stortford, Herts to Edward  and Mary Ann Bowman (nee White). He was registered as Edward White as his parents did not marry until 1898. On the 1901 Census he was living with his family at Chapel Row Cottages, Bishop's Stortford.


By the 1911 Census his father had died and he was living with his mother and sister Edith Maud at 19 New Path, Bishop's Stortford where he was working as a Grocer's Shop Assistant.

Wartime Service

He enlisted in Bedford and served with 4th Bn. Bedfordshire Regiment. He died on 30 October 1917 during second battle of Passchendaele. 


The attack started at 5.50 am but was held up by very heavy and boggy ground surrounding the Paddebeek and a total advance of only about 150-200 yards was made. Several officers were killed, with 54 other ranks killed, 180 wounded and 23 missing. His body was never recovered. 

Additional Information

His half brother Harry White received a war gratuity of £5 10s and his sister in law Ellen received his pay owing of £3 2s 7d at Harry White's request.
