Lionel Henry Salvin Bowlby was born on 17 Apr 1892 at Gilston Park Herts to Edward Salvin Bowlby and Elizabeth (nee Vans-Agnew).
He was educated at Farnborough School and Eton College. He graduated from Royal Military College and was commissioned as 2nd Lieutenant in 2 Dragoons (Royal Scots Greys) on 3 Sep 1911 and promoted to Lieutenant on 1913.
Wartime Service
He went to France on 25 Sep 1914 when the Scots Greys were deployed as part of the rearguard on the Retreat from Mons. They also formed the screen for the advance after the Battles of the Marne and the Aisne. On the establishment of trench warfare, they fought dismounted for considerable periods including 1st and 2nd Battles of Ypres.
Henry died from wounds on 4 Jun 1916 near Dickebusch near Ypres.
Additional Information
His mother, Mrs E. Salvin Bowlby, of 56, Lowndes Square, London SW1, ordered his headstone inscription: "YOUNGEST SON OF EDWARD SALVIN BOWLBY OF GILSTON PARK AND KNOYDART". His Mother received his pay and effects of £4 15s 11d and estate of £529 19s. His older brother Geoffrey Vaux Salvin , Captain, RHG (Blues) died in action on 13 May 1915. Both are mentioned on the family grave in Eastwick
