Northaw Village Memorial

Pre War

Born in Kensington, one of probably 7 children of James and Mary Bowern. In 1901 he is shown as being at Witley All Saints School, Wormley, Surrey. He enlisted into The Royal Navy on 14th July 1905, signing on for 12 years. He served on several ships before becoming part of the crew of H.M.S. Bulwark.

Wartime Service

Portland, carrying out many patrols in The English Channel. In November 1914, the Squadron was moved to Sheerness, Essex, to guard against a possible German invasion. On 26th November 1914, whilst moored, an internal explosion blew the ship to pieces with a total loss of life of 736 men and Officers. 14 only survived, of which 2 subsequently died.
