Pre War
Harry Riley was the alias that Henry (in the family - Harry) RIglut (as the Army knew him) used for service in World War 1. He was born Henry Riegelhuth in St Georges in the East, London in 1880 to Henry Riegelhuth, a picture framer, and Catherine (nee Bastian).
Harry’s Grandfather Adam and Grandmother Katarina had been born in Germany and came to England sometime prior to 1860. On the 1881 Census the family of Father Henry, Mother Catherine and Harry were living with the Bastians at Grove Street, St Georges in the East, London. By the 1891 Census Harry (aged 10) was still at the Bastians on Grove Street. On the 1901 Census Harry was with the family of Father, Mother, and Brother John & Walter at 20, Cornwall Street, and his occupation was a dock labourer.
Wartime Service
No service records could be found for Harry (known as Henry for service purposes). His medal card states he went to France on 12 Sep 1914 as Private L/8803 with 4th Battalion Duke of Cambridge’s Own (Middlesex) Regiment. The L prefix was normally issued for regulars and his number was issued in 1903/4 so Henry may have been serving or on reserve, accounting for his early deployment. 4th Battalion served on the Somme 1916 and at Arras 1917. Harry died on 13 Jul 1917 (probably at Barnet War Hospital) and is buried in Bells Hill Burial Ground, Barnet.
