Pre War

Walter James Boultwood was born in 1890 in Bishop's Stortford to Thomas and Eliza Boultwood and baptised on 1 November 1895 at Holy Trinity, Bishop's Stortford.


On the 1911 Census he was living with his family at 50 Middle Row, Bishop's Stortford and working as a Domestic Groom.

Wartime Service

He initially enlisted with the Bedfordshire Regiment under Reg. No. 6452 later joined the Leicestershire Regiment, 7th Bn.


He was probably killed during the 2nd Battle of Passchendaele. His body was never recovered. 

Additional Information

His mother received a war gratuity of £7 and pay owing of £4 12s 8d.


His brother Herbert was also killed and is also named on the Bishop's Stortford War Memorial and the Holy Trinity Church memorial. He died on 3 December 1917 and is named on the Cambrai Memorial at Louveral in France.
