Pre War
John Charles Richardson was born in Cheshunt, Hertfordshire, on 3rd July 1891, son of John Edmond Richardson a, Domestic Gardener and Ann Richardson (nee Francis). One of three children although one died in infancy.
John Jr. was Baptised on 9th August 1891 at the Church of St Mary the Virgin, Walthamstow, Essex.
1901 Census records John Jr. aged 9, living with his parents, and sister Ethel (11) at, 5 Prospect Road, Cheshunt, Herts.
1911 Census, John Jr. (19), his parents and sister Ethel are still living at, 5 Prospect Road, Cheshunt, John Jr. is employed as an Invoice Clerk.
The family would later move to 1 Clark’s Cottages, Woodford Road, South Woodford, Essex.
Wartime Service
John Jr. enlisted on 6th November 1915, posted to the 9th (County of London) Battalion, The London Regiment (Queen Victoria’s Rifles), with the service number 5535. Later transferred to the 2nd/24th (County of London) Battalion, The London Regiment (The Queens), with the service number 6046 (later 722847 when service numbers were standardised in 1917). On completion of his training, he Embarked at Southampton on 25th June 1916, for Le Havre, France, arriving the following day the 26th. Seeing action on the Western Front.
In December 1916, John Jr. and his Battalion travelled by train to Marseilles from where they sailed on 3rd December 1916, for Salonica, arriving on 14th December, after a stay of 6 months the Battalion left on 16th June 1917, for Alexandria, Egypt, arriving on 19th June 1917. John Jr. was killed in action in Syria on 27th December 1917, aged 26, he is buried in the CWGC Jerusalem War Cemetery, Israel and Palestine (including Gaza), Grave Ref; P. 125.
Additional Information
His effects of £11-15s-7d, pay owing and his war gratuity of £9, went to his father John Richardson of “Dunbar” Woodford Road, South Woodford, Essex, as requested in his Will.
His service records survived and is available on-line.
