Pre War

Cecil Rich was born in Turnford, Hertfordshire, on 1st November 1891, son of Joseph Rich a, Market Gardener and Elizabeth Rich, their only son.


He was Baptised on 20th May 1900, in the Parish of Cheshunt, Herts.


1901 Census records Cecil aged 9, living with his parents at, 3 Nursery Road, Turnford, Herts. The family have two boarders living with them.


1911 Census, Cecil (19), is working as a Nursery Gardener, living with his parents, still at 3 Nursery Road, Turnford. They have a Boarder also a Nursery Gardener.

Wartime Service

Cecil enlisted at Enfield, Middx, posted to the 11th Battalion, Royal Fusiliers with the service number 66018. Later transferred to the 2nd Battalion, Duke of Cambridges Own (Middlesex Regiment) with the service number G/41350. Seeing action on the Western Front,


Cecil was Killed in Action on 1st August 1917, during the Battle of Pilkem Ridge (31st July to 2nd August 1917), This was the opening attack of the third battle of Ypres (31st July to 10th November 1917). He has no known grave, he is commemorated on the Ypres (Menin Gate) Memorial, in Belgium to the missing.

Additional Information

His mother Elizabeth received a dependents pension of 10/6 a week from 10th September 1918, and his effects of £2-17s-7d, pay owing and his war gratuity of £4.
