Pre War

William REYNOLDS was born in the early part of 1884, in Tyttenhanger Green, Hertfordshire, son of George Reynolds an Agricultural worker and Eber/Ebba Reynolds (nee Littlechild). One of their twelve children although one died in infancy.


1891 Census records William aged 7, living with his parents, three sister and two brothers in Tyttenhanger Green, Herts.


William enlisted in August 1900, aged 16, in the Bedfordshire Regiment, issued with the service number 6825. William was sent as a draft to South Africa in late 1901, early 1902, during the Second Boer War (Second Boer War 11th Oct 1899 to 31st May 1902) joining the 2nd Battalion, Bedfordshire Regiment. William was awarded the Kings South Africa Medal with the Cape Coloney and Orange Free State Clasps.


William married Rose Pearce also of Tyttenhanger Green, Herts, in 1907, the marriage was registered in St Albans, they went on to have four children Willliam B 1908, Lillian B 1910, Phylis B 1912 and Ivy B 1915.


1911 Census records William, married to Rose, they have two children William (2) and Lillian (6 months), living in Tyttenhanger Green, Herts, William is employed as a Platelayer for the Midlands Railway Company.

Wartime Service

It is believed William was in the Army Reserve at the outbreak of the war, re-joining the Bedfordshire Regiment with his old service number 6825. Seeing action on the Western Front, he was Killed in Action on 6th August 1918, aged 32, he has no known grave, he is Commemorated on the Pozieres Memorial in France to the missing, Panels 28 + 29.

Additional Information

His widow Rose received a grant of £9, on 27th August 1918, a widow’s pension of 38/9 (£1-18s-09d), a week from 17th February 1919, his pay owing of £38, and his war gratuity of £30-10s-00d.


William was one of six brothers who served in the Great War. Brother 4112 Lance Corporal Edward Reynolds of the Queens Royal Lancers was Killed in Action on 30th October 1914, aged 19.
