Walter Charles Boltwood was born in Wormley, Hertfordshire on 22nd June 1894, Son of William Boltwood and Rosa Harriet Boltwood (nee Roll/Woods). William was Rosa’s second husband, her first husband Henry Woods died in 1887. Walter was one of five children to William and Rosa, although one died in infancy.
He was Baptised in the Parish Church, Wormley, Herts on, 29th July 1894.
Walter attended St Marys Infants School, Cheshunt and Dewhurst Endowed Boys School, Cheshunt.
1901 Census records Walter aged 6, living with his parents, Stepbrother James Wood (21), brothers William (13), Alfred (11), and George (9) at, 2, Diamond Villas, Cromwell Avenue, Cheshunt, Herts.
1911 Census records Walter aged 12, and date of birth 1899, working as a tomato grower, living with his mother and brother George. The head of the household is Robert Woods, his stepbrother at, 44, Prospect Road, Cheshunt, Herts.
Wartime Service
Walter travelled to the County Town of Hertford to enlist, posted to the Hertfordshire Regiment with the service number 5238, later transferred to the Lancashire Fusiliers with the service number 331041. Seeing action on the Western Front.
He was killed in action on 1st September 1918, he is buried in the CWGC Bancourt British Cemetery in France.
Additional Information
His effects of £10-16s-5d, Pay Owing and £14-10s-00d War Gratuity went to his father William.
His Headstone inscription “FOR EVER IN OUR THOUGHTS“ was requested by his stepbrother Robert Woods, of 18, Chesterton Road, Plaistow, London, E. 13.
His brother Private 8632 George Herbert Boltwood died of wounds received in action on 27th May 1917 and brother Private 13418 Alfred Boltwood survived the war.
