Born in 1898 in Folkestone, Kent son of Capt. Thomas Smalley and Selina Mary (Whicher) Boileau of 97 South Croxted Road, West Dulwich, London. Educated at the Imperial Service College, Windsor and the Royal Military College, Sandhurst. He was unmarried.

Wartime Service

Gazetted 2nd Lieutenant on 19 Jul 1916, entered France on 24 Nov 1917 and was promoted Lieutenant on 19 Jan 1918. He became a Lewis Gun Instructor in 1918 and Assistant Adjutant in Sep 1918 and acted as Liaison Officer to the Brigadier General. He was killed in action during an attack at Sequehart near St. Quentin.

Imperial Service College was formed in Windsor in 1912 and then moved to Haileybury College, Hertford Heath in 1942.
