Pre War

Charles William Reynolds was born on 12 December 1893 in Cadwell, Holwell, nr Hitchin, Herts, the son of Thomas and Rosanna Reynolds, and baptised on 29 July 1894 at Ickleford, Herts. He was one of eleven children. 


On the 1901 Census the family were living at Cadwell where his father was working as a Cement Maker. They remained in Cadwell in 1911 at which time, Charles was working as a blacksmith's apprentice.

Wartime Service

Charles enlisted in Hitchin and served with the 6th Battalion, Bedfordshire Regiment. 


He was killed in action on 15 July 1916 during the Battle of Bazentin Ridge, (Battle of the Somme). He has no known grave and his name is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial, France. 

Additional Information

His mother received a war gratuity of £8 10s and his father received pay owing of £4 6s 10d. Pension records exist but give no indication of the amount of pension received.
