He was born in Sawbridgeworth in 1889 and and was baptised in August that year. resident in Hammersmith when he enlisted in Bedford.


William was a professional soldier, enlisting with the 1st Battalion Bedfordshire Regiment in 1910.

Wartime Service

At the start of the Great War, William’s Battalion was stationed at Mullingar in Ireland. They were quickly transported to France, arriving at Le Havre on board the SS Oronsa 16 August 1914.

The Battalion was rapidly involved in all the opening battles, Mons, Le Cateau, and First Marne.

In mid-September, the Battalion took part in the First Battle of the Aisne. Between 13-15 September the Battalion diary noted 75 casualties wounded. One of these was William who was mortally wounded there.

William survived long enough to be evacuated back to Britain for treatment in hospital in London. However, on 4 November 1914, William Revell died of his wounds. He was aged 25.

William Revell is buried at Hammersmith Old Cemetery, London.

He was the uncle of Edmund Revell who also died.
