Pre War
Son of Fanny BLANCHARD of Watford, and the late Alfred BLANCHARD.
His parents married 26 October 1879 at St Thomas’, Stepney, London. Alfred died 1903 in the Whitechapel, London, district aged 51; Fanny died 1928 in Watford aged 70, and was buried 28 January in Vicarage Road Cemetery, Watford.
Cornelius was born 1889 in Poplar, and baptised 14 August 1889 at St Michael’s, Bromley St Leonard’s, London.
On the 1891 Census, aged 1 he lived in Bromley St Leonard’s, with his parents and two siblings. On the 1901 Census, aged 11 he lived in West Ham, Essex, with his parents and five siblings. On the 1911 Census, a Private in the 2nd York and Lancaster Regiment aged 21, he was stationed at Blackdown Barracks, Farnborough, Hants.
He originally attested for the Militia, 6th Battalion Middlesex Regiment, 1 July 1907 at Stratford, London: a general labourer aged 18, 5’5″ tall, Presbyterian, of 341 St Leonard’s Road, Poplar, London. He transferred to the Regular Army 24 August 1907, York and Lancaster Regiment; his next-of-kin was his mother of Poplar. He was in hospital in Limerick, Ireland between 6 and 13 August 1913.
Wartime Service
He was entitled to the Victory, British War and 1914 Star medals, his qualifying date being 9 September 1914, and was killed in action.
