Ernest Blake was born on 7th June 1893, in Wigginton, Herts, son of George Blake a Brickmaker (B 1866 in Tring, Herts) and Rose Blake (nee Wells) (B 1866 in Aldbury, Herts) Ernest was Baptised on 3rd September 1893 in Aldbury, Herts.


1901 Census records Ernest aged 7, at school, living with his parents, brother Harry and sister Ethel 11, at The Kiln Cottages, Wigginton, Herts.


By 1911 now aged 17 Ernest was working as a Carter, living at home with his parents and sister Ethel 21, in Chesham Road, Wigginton, Herts. 

Wartime Service

Ernest enlisted in Aylesbury, Bucks, posted to the 2nd/1st Bucks Battalion, Oxfordshire and Buckinghamshire Regiment, with the Service No. 3715.


Ernest was Killed in Action on 22nd April 1916, aged 21. He is buried in the CWGC Hebuterne Military Cemetery in France. Grave Ref:  I. B. 1.


Some records suggest he died of wounds on 23 April 1916,


The CWGC records give his Battalion as 1st/1st Bucks Battalion others 2nd/1st Bucks Battalion. 

Additional Information

The value of his effects were £3-3s-11d, Pay Owing and £3, War Gratuity which went to his mother Rose.
