Pre War
Arthur Blake was born in Flampstead, Herts, in 1889, son of Frederick Blake (a Wood Sawyer) and Elizabeth Blake. One of thirteen children, eight of which died in infancy.
Arthur was Baptised on 20 March 1889, in Markyate, Herts, with his brothers, Walter, and William, and sisters, Maud, and Annie.
1891 Census records Arthur aged 2, living with his parents, two brothers and three sisters at, White House, London Road, Flampstead, Herts.
1901 Census records the family living in Markyate, Herts, Arthur aged 12, his parents, three brothers and three sisters.
1911 Census records Arthur aged 22, boarding with James & Jane Draper and their family in Cobden Hill, Radlett, Herts, his occupation is given as a Hay Binder.
In 1912 Arthurs father Frederick died aged 57. In October of that year, Arthur Married Annie Smith, they went on to have two children, Rose, and Albert.
Wartime Service
Arthur enlisted at Bedford, posted to the East Surrey Regiment with the service number 20728.
He was Killed in Action on 12 August 1916, he has no known grave and is Commemorated on the Ploegsteert Memorial to the missing in Belgium. Panel. 6.
Additional Information
The value of his effects was £2-2s-6d, Pay Owing and £3, War gratuity which when to his widow Annie. Annie received a War Widows pension of 18/6 a week from 5 March 1917. His widow Annie remarried in March 1920 to Arthur E. Sumner. SDITGW, give his place of birth as Hertford, Herts, this is incorrect, he was born in Flampstead.
